PART 2

Coming Up Short: What Happens When We Miss the Movement Window?

In Part 1, we looked at why early movement patterns are the foundation of physical, emotional and athletic development. But what happens if kids don’t get this foundation?

It’s not a scare tactic — it’s a reality. Missing this golden window (it can be anywhere between 5-12, depending on the child) can make things much harder later on.

The Risks of Missing This Stage
  • Delayed Movement Maturity: At this age, kids should be refining key physical skills — sprinting cleanly, changing direction smoothly, jumping and landing with control, throwing and catching with confidence. Without regular practice, their movement can remain clunky or uncoordinated, holding them back in both sport and play.
  • Confidence Takes a Hit: By primary school, kids are very aware of how they stack up against their peers. If they struggle to keep up in games or sports, it can lead to embarrassment, withdrawal from physical activity — and a downward spiral of confidence.
  • Cognitive and Classroom Challenges: Good movement helps build strong posture, focus, emotional regulation and stamina — all crucial for learning. Kids who don’t move well often fidget more, tire quickly, and may struggle with tasks like handwriting or sitting still for long periods.
  • Higher Injury Risk in Sport and Play: Without good mechanics — like knowing how to decelerate, land from a jump, or change direction safely — kids put their growing bodies at greater risk of injury. Sprains, awkward falls, and even preventable overload injuries become more common.
  • Sporting Frustration & Plateauing: At this stage, sports become more complex — and without a base of agility, balance, coordination, and strength, even talented kids plateau early. They might find team sports confusing, tiring or just not enjoyable, simply because their body isn’t equipped to keep up.

So, What Can We Do About It?
The great news? Kids are super adaptable — if you act within this window. That’s why we’re so passionate about offering high-energy, smartly structured sessions that reintroduce these fundamental patterns in a way that’s fun, age-appropriate and confidence-boosting.

Our goal at Multi-Sport Kids Academy isn’t just to help kids enjoy movement now — it’s to help them move through life with strength, speed, skill and belief in themselves.

Next Month?
We’ll dive into how early athletic development helps unlock your child’s sport-specific potential, and why the best rugby players, gymnasts, tennis stars and dancers all have the same physical foundations.

Let’s build better humans — one cartwheel, sprint and giggle at a time.

The Secret Sauce to Raising Strong, Happy Kids! PART 1

Part 1
Why Movement Patterns Matter (Big Time!) for Kids

At Multi-Sport Kids Academy, we’re not just running around for the fun of it (well… we are having fun, but it’s with purpose!). Every sprint, skip, jump, twist and roll helps lay the groundwork for healthy, happy and confident kids. These are called movement patterns, and they're the building blocks of athleticism — and life.

So… What Are Movement Patterns?

Think of them as a child’s physical alphabet:
  • Locomotor movements – running, hopping, skipping, crawling
  • Stability movements – balancing, twisting, bending
  • Manipulative movements – lifting, throwing, catching, pushing

Mastering these early is a game-changer. Why? Because strong patterns = strong kids.

Why It’s Seriously Important To Build These Patterns Early

🧠 Brain Power Boost – Movement literally grows the brain. Crawling through tunnels and balancing on beams creates neural pathways tied to focus, memory and coordination.
💪 Strength & Skill – Climbing, jumping, running... they all improve major muscle groups and tone, gross motor skills and fine motor control (yes, even pencil grip!).
🧍‍♀️ Better Posture & Fewer Injuries – Kids with good movement habits move better, feel better, and are far less likely to hurt themselves doing everyday things.
🌟 Confidence & Resilience – When kids move well, they feel unstoppable — on the playground, on the court, and in the classroom. You rarely find a shy sportsperson.
🏃‍♀️ Lifelong Athleticism – You can’t dribble a soccer ball or swing a tennis racket if you haven’t nailed the basics. Every pro athlete started by learning how to balance, jump and run properly.

The Secret Weapons? Gymnastics & Athletic Development Training

These aren’t just sports — they’re skills-for-life creators.
  • Gymnastics builds balance, coordination, flexibility, body awareness and confidence.
  • Athletic Development builds speed, agility, strength, power, and movement quality — all the key physical tools that kids need before they specialise in a sport.

These sessions don’t just make your child fitter and faster — they make them smarter movers, thinkers and doers.

How Can You Help at Home in at this key age?

  • Let them play like crazy — tag, hopscotch, monkey bars, climb beds and sofas, obstacle courses!
  • Give them age-appropriate challenges — jumping over puddles, balancing on a log, crawling under tables.
  • Say YES to mess and movement — climbing, rolling, falling (safely!) builds resilience and courage. It is hard with the mess, we know, but you will be thankful in later life when they are quick movers!
  • Enrol them in Athletics Development classes and Gymnastics groups that are fun and built to grow their skills. Once per week for each discipline should be enough, but the more the better! They have the energy and should be running and rolling a lot every day (which is why it is key to do these activities at home too).
  • Oh, and be a role model — move with them. Get involved. Be silly. They’ll love it!

Final Word

Strong movement patterns don’t just make for better athletes — they make for better humans. They boost brain function, social skills, physical confidence, and emotional well-being. That’s why at Multi-Sport Kids Academy, we mix structured fun, serious sprinting and skill-building, and a whole lot of jumping.

You’ll thank yourself later when they glide into sports like naturals in their teenage years and beyond. Let’s build a love for movement now that sticks with them for life.

Next month, we will talk about what can happen when kids miss this key development stage, so stay tuned and spread the word! 🙂
