PART 2

Coming Up Short: What Happens When We Miss the Movement Window?

In Part 1, we looked at why early movement patterns are the foundation of physical, emotional and athletic development. But what happens if kids don’t get this foundation?

It’s not a scare tactic — it’s a reality. Missing this golden window (it can be anywhere between 5-12, depending on the child) can make things much harder later on.

The Risks of Missing This Stage
  • Delayed Movement Maturity: At this age, kids should be refining key physical skills — sprinting cleanly, changing direction smoothly, jumping and landing with control, throwing and catching with confidence. Without regular practice, their movement can remain clunky or uncoordinated, holding them back in both sport and play.
  • Confidence Takes a Hit: By primary school, kids are very aware of how they stack up against their peers. If they struggle to keep up in games or sports, it can lead to embarrassment, withdrawal from physical activity — and a downward spiral of confidence.
  • Cognitive and Classroom Challenges: Good movement helps build strong posture, focus, emotional regulation and stamina — all crucial for learning. Kids who don’t move well often fidget more, tire quickly, and may struggle with tasks like handwriting or sitting still for long periods.
  • Higher Injury Risk in Sport and Play: Without good mechanics — like knowing how to decelerate, land from a jump, or change direction safely — kids put their growing bodies at greater risk of injury. Sprains, awkward falls, and even preventable overload injuries become more common.
  • Sporting Frustration & Plateauing: At this stage, sports become more complex — and without a base of agility, balance, coordination, and strength, even talented kids plateau early. They might find team sports confusing, tiring or just not enjoyable, simply because their body isn’t equipped to keep up.

So, What Can We Do About It?
The great news? Kids are super adaptable — if you act within this window. That’s why we’re so passionate about offering high-energy, smartly structured sessions that reintroduce these fundamental patterns in a way that’s fun, age-appropriate and confidence-boosting.

Our goal at Multi-Sport Kids Academy isn’t just to help kids enjoy movement now — it’s to help them move through life with strength, speed, skill and belief in themselves.

Next Month?
We’ll dive into how early athletic development helps unlock your child’s sport-specific potential, and why the best rugby players, gymnasts, tennis stars and dancers all have the same physical foundations.

Let’s build better humans — one cartwheel, sprint and giggle at a time.
